What is Ford Intelligent Speed Assist?

To stay safe on the roads and reduce incidents, observing and respecting speed limits is essential. Intelligent Speed Assist has been designed to enhance your Adjustable Speed Limiter, helping you to focus more on the road. This system will adjust the maximum speed of your vehicle to the speed limit detected by the Traffic Sign Recognition camera. Ford’s Intelligent Speed Assist uses a camera mounted on the windscreen to monitor road signs, so speed will be monitored and adjusted accordingly. In turn, it could stop you from incurring speeding fines and penalty points.

How does it work?

The new Ford S-MAX is the first available vehicle in the Ford range with this technology. The system is activated via controls mounted on the steering wheel, and the driver can then accelerate up to the current speed limit until it is prevented from going any faster to avoid breaking the speed limit. This technology combines traffic sign recognition with Ford’s adjustable speed limiter, and it is effective from 20mph to 120mph. Therefore, it is suitable for basically all roads.

The process of deceleration occurs by restricting fuel supply to the engine, which ensures a smooth deceleration for the occupant of the vehicle. If the vehicle is speeding when travelling downhill, an alarm will sound to make the driver aware of this. If at any point the system needs to be disengaged, a firm press of the accelerator pedal disables the system.
